Racing shoes. We’ll see if I can get them broke in for next weekend. Tri specific. No socks needed - allegedly. And apparently they only come in teenage girl styling.
Trusty Surly back in service.
As previously noted, I was having trouble with my Cross Check thus spring. After several misdiagnosis, I finally found the problem - a worn freewheel hub. Well I got everything back together and after some fits and starts and adjustments it’s finally back in service.
I’ve put nearly 10,000 miles on this bike. But it’s now got a new bottom bracket and new freewheel hub so it’s ready for the foreseeable future.
The interesting thing is that the new freewheel is absolutely silent. The old one had a pronounced ratchet while coasting. This is better.
Thanks to Kyle at spoke n sport for the technical advice.
Ever wonder what it’s like to ride in a bike race? This is a pretty cool helmet cam vid from Dustin at Central Plains Cycling from the first Spoke n Sport Crit. The video has notes on what’s happening in the race too, which is helpful. But the best part is when he’s right the pack. Next race is June 14, Yankton Trail Park.

Knocked out the last long run today before Half Ironman in a couple weeks. Now the taper. Sweet taper, how I’ve missed thee. There’s a longish bike ride on the schedule this weekend but that will seem like nothing now. But that run was, shall we say, difficult. I think it was the swim workouts last couple days took more out of my legs than I thought. Did just over 13. Probably wouldn’t have done it without JPK being there for much of it. Time to get my head in the right place. Been a long road.
First Olympic is in the books. Ended up 33rd overall, 4th in age group. Total time, 2:40:51. I’m fine with it. Could have hammered a bit more on the first half of the bike but I didn’t want to leave all my energy there and not have anything for the run. But I ended up with a nice run so, you know. That’s the game.

Done everything I can do tonight including taping a couple gels and a clif bar to my bike. My plan is to peel them off and stick them in my back pocket during the ride. I always forget to grab them in transition.
I’ll admit to some nerves tonight. This is my longest race so far. Just under mile swim, 24 bike and 10k run. Should take about 2.5 hours.
Swim looks really long from shore.
See you out there.
